Another new one from ABC, Manhattan Love Story is an adorable, honest, funny Rom-Com about a newly set-up couple as they begin, and navigate the trails of, their relationship.
First Impressions
I get it. It’s going to be a unique style with adorable characters and humorous situations. Only, I don’t get it. These inner voices are not cute to me. This show is not funny to me. It looks like it will just be so cliche and cheesy and painful to watch, in a sort of, “did you really just do that” kind of way.

Then you may just love this show. I found myself cringing in bridesmaids, wondering why the main character was messing up so royally and why she didn’t just communicate with people. I felt similar during this show. The screw ups were more accidental, more genuine… But they were there. And I was physically stressed out. (I suffer from a high level of embarrassment empathy.) The inner dialogue added to these situations, and I did find myself becoming accustomed to it. The pitch of their voices left something to be desired, and let’s just agree that if the inner voice adds nothing to the scene, it should be left out.
Well written story-telling
Character development, thematic jokes, and totally realistic scenarios: I actually started to get on board! Despite the over done story-line of straightforward, normal romance, I think that the way in which this story is told is the unique aspect. In fact, because the story is such a stereotypical one, I expect that it will resonate with many audiences – especially the younger adults who enjoy strong female characters and the typical goof-up male. By the end, I was even enjoying the technology-inept jokes of our female lead, which had previously be painful for me. It became endearing and lighthearted… especially as they create caring characters who seem to accept each other’s flaws rather than just point and laugh.
It’s a yes
I’ll give it another shot at being the cutest new TV show in my repertoire, and gamble that it’ll be pretty popular in general. Maybe I won’t be the only person who doesn’t like the inner dialogue and we can hope for a change in style by mid-season. Overall it’s just a feel-good show with far too many “I’ve done that before” moments to write it off. It understands us.
