A few months ago, I stumbled upon this awesome idea to stuff some christmas lights into a wine bottle and call it a day. Don’t ask me how – I wouldn’t even have been able to find this page again if I wasn’t such a huge Google fanatic who only uses Chrome and thus has all of her bookmarks and history saved across computers! (Seriously, I googled “Christmas Light Wine Glass” and there was an assortment of results – but only one purple, visited link.) Since it’s Summer, I had no excuse not to finish up this DIY project!
First, and this is very important: TEST YOUR LIGHTS. If half your strand isn’t working, that makes it all the more perfect! I tried extremely hard to get an entire string of lights to fit inside my wine bottle… not gonna happen. Since I had my boyfriend doing all the electrical work, I asked him to cut off the lights where they had a loose bulb and kept shorting out. So he literally cut. the. lights. With scissors.
When I sent Kristofer out for wine glasses (months ago) he came back with this fun design that had a duck on it – unfortunately, the wine was super cheap and tasted awful! On the other hand, I already dislike wine, so Kristofer for responsible for choking it all down!
So at this point, you need to decide how you want your lights to attach to an outlet. We’ve already cut off one end (hopefully towards the side of the light with the female outlet… since you’re doing to need the male end to supply the power), but we need to decide what to do with the other end. We can:
- drill a hole in the bottom of the jar, cut the other (power) end, stick it through said hole, and splice the wires back together, or
- feed the already cut end of the lights into the jar, and leave the power end trailing out of the neck – best for displaying our bottle light on its side.
This time Kristofer did some actual fancy work and striped the wires, twisted the exposed parts back together, and taped it up all fancy like using green electrical tape. We stuck the cork back in (I know it’s upside down in this picture, but the other direction is right side up!), and went to test it out. Since it was day-time, I took it to a bathroom with no windows. ;)
Lights off, and it looks gorgeous!
I’m actually completely undecided where I want to put it in my apartment – keep it for myself in the bedroom, or use in downstairs where I can show it off to guests?!
[…] and I are keeping up with his advent calendar – so far we’ve made christmas crafts (wine bottles with lights), decorated our tree (it’s tiny), watched a movie together (he chose a horror movie…), […]
