Pilot Review: The McCarthys

Pilot Review: The McCarthys

The McCarthys is a Boston-based, sports-obsessed, close-knit-family sitcom based loosely on the experiences of the creator and producer.

First Impressions

I like the style of humor and the jokes are funny to me. The highest compliment I can give it is “families are just like this!” Really, I think it catches the essence of how crazy our families seem, especially to us, and how much we love them despite it. It’s definitely not my genre/type of comedy though. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkElzRC_GDk]

I Appreciate the Topical Humor

This is the last pilot I have, and I wanted to end with something funny and upbeat! Not a bad choice, since I did feel pretty lighthearted during the show, despite some scenes having the potential to be heavy (I mean, a wake would be, right?) Highlights for me were the gay jokes and the over-dramatic mom. I particularly enjoyed when characters were poking fun at his job, because my boyfriend is in a similar field (school psychology =/= guidance counselor). I probably missed 80% of the sports references though… oops! (I got the Miami Heat… but I am from Florida, so.) Cringe moments were whenever we had a scene of an adult putting down a kid – I know it’s a joke, but it got to me! Also anything with the sister, who was pretty regularly picked on – mostly by the mother.

“Essentially Has a Constant Laugh Track”

Just like Cristela, this show has a laugh track playing too often. Honestly, I am almost starting to get used to it. For the first 5 minutes or so, I didn’t notice it. Once I did notice it, however, I couldn’t stop hearing it. Without my prompting, Kristofer even mentioned that it felt overdone. (He watches a few different sitcoms than I do, namely Community and Modern Family.)

This Still Isn’t My Style

I mean, I didn’t dislike it. I laughed at it. I even enjoyed it. I also cringed, I got annoyed, and I felt bored. It’s just not something I would watch regularly. Kristofer felt it was “very choppy. There did not seem to be a lot of continuity.” That statement could probably use a little justification, so you’ll just have to take it with a grain of salt. Fast-paced and heartwarming, The McCarthys definitely isn’t the worst show out there. It’s just not the best, even in its genre, either.
