Galavant is a hilarious, honest musical – yes, you heard that right. Actually, I sort of liked it, and I felt that I should be a bit embarrassed by that!
Trailer impressions
I saw this pilot before the trailer, so I was so caught off guard when it started. I absolutely thought it was a joke. But as the description says, “Comedy. Musical. Fairytale. What’s not to love?”
Laughs for everyone
This show isn’t trying to be serious – it looks silly, sounds cheesy, and will make fun of itself endlessly. Filled with awkward scenes that are hilariously honest, and lines like “avoider of bathing, spreader of syphilis”, Galavant is a laugh out loud show for that long day, after work. With musical numbers by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater, Disney lovers can rejoice – this show is perfect for them.
I’m a skeptic
What I’m not entirely convinced of is how this show will fill a season. And certainly not last past that. Laughs are great, but we shouldn’t discount the importance of plot. We’ve got one going on here, but can we maintain it and the silliness and the music? Anyway, is anyone really interested in this plot? It’s obviously going to have the “I only betrayed you before I fell in love with you” story. But even the final song of this show admits the story line is a cliche.
It’s pretty catchy
Despite feeling certain that this show got the green light on novelty value alone, I actually found myself humming along to this! If the writers are just having fun with this show, I think viewers should wind down with it and do the same. With ABC’s already healthy Once Upon a Time audience, I don’t think they’ll have a hard time finding viewers to watch, and enjoy, Galavant.
